{"id":7619,"date":"2012-08-15T03:59:49","date_gmt":"2012-08-15T03:59:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.freedomfrommedom.com\/wp3\/?page_id=7619"},"modified":"2014-10-07T18:17:04","modified_gmt":"2014-10-07T18:17:04","slug":"alcohol-abuse-dependence","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.freedomfrommedom.com\/wp3\/alcohol-abuse-dependence","title":{"rendered":"Alcohol Abuse &#038; Dependence (MAST, CAGE)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"><strong>MAST (Michigan Alcohol Screening Test)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">Developed in 1971, the Michigan Alcohol Screening Test (MAST) is one of the oldest and most accurate alcohol screening tests available, effective in identifying dependent drinkers with up to 98 percent accuracy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">Questions on the MAST test relate to the patient&#8217;s self-appraisal of social, vocational, and family problems frequently associated with heavy drinking. The test was developed to screen for alcohol problems in the general population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">There are two drawbacks to the MAST test, compared with\u00a0other alcohol screening testsavailable today. The length of the test makes it less convenient to administer in a busy primary care office or emergency room setting, compared to the shorter four- or five-question tests available. The questions on the MAST test also focus on problems over the patient&#8217;s lifetime, rather than on current problems. This means the test is less likely to detect alcohol problems in the early stages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">Over the years, there have been several variations of the MAST developed, including the brief MAST, the short MAST, as well as the self-administered MAST. The following is the 22-question, self-administered MAST.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"><strong>The MAST Test<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">The MAST Test is a simple, self-scoring test that helps assess if you have a drinking problem. Answer yes or no to the following questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">1. Do you feel you are a normal drinker? (&#8220;normal&#8221; is defined as drinking as much or less than most other people)<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"> ___ Yes\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0___ No<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">2. Have you ever awakened the morning after drinking the night before and found that you could not remember a part of the evening?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"> ___ Yes\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0___ No<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">3. Does any near relative or close friend ever worry or complain about your drinking?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"> ___ Yes\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0___ No<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">4. Can you stop drinking without difficulty after one or two drinks?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"> ___ Yes\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0___ No<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">5. Do you ever feel guilty about your drinking?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"> ___ Yes\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0___ No<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">6. Have you ever attended a meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"> ___ Yes\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0___ No<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">7. Have you ever gotten into physical fights when drinking?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"> ___ Yes\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0___ No<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">8. Has drinking ever created problems between you and a near relative or close friend?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"> ___ Yes\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0___ No<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">9. Has your drinking ever resulted in your being hospitalized in a psychiatric ward?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"> ___ Yes\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0___ No<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">20. Have you ever gone to any doctor, social worker, clergyman, or mental health clinic for help with any emotional problem in which drinking was part of the problem?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"> ___ Yes\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0___ No<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">21. Have you been arrested more than once for driving under the influence of alcohol?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"> ___ Yes\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0___ No<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">22. Have you ever been arrested, or detained by an official for a few hours, because of other behavior while drinking?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"> ___ Yes\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0___ No<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"><strong>Scoring the MAST Test<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">Score one point if you answered &#8220;no&#8221; to the following questions: 1 or 4. Score one point if you answered &#8220;yes&#8221; to the following questions: 2, 3, 5 through 22.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">A total score of six or more indicates hazardous drinking or alcohol dependence and further evaluation by a healthcare professional is recommended.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"><strong>CAGE Questionnaire<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">Two &#8220;yes&#8221; responses indicate that the possibility of alcoholism should be investigated further. The questionnaire asks the following questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">Have you ever felt you needed to\u00a0<strong>C<\/strong>ut down on your drinking?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">Have people\u00a0<strong>A<\/strong>nnoyed you by criticizing your drinking?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">Have you ever felt\u00a0<strong>G<\/strong>uilty about drinking?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">Have you ever felt you needed a drink first thing in the morning (<strong>E<\/strong>ye-opener) to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"><strong>CRAFFT Questionnaire<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"><strong>CRAFFT Screening Test<\/strong>\u00a0is a short, self-administered behavioral health screening tool developed to screen adolescents for high risk\u00a0alcohol\u00a0and other drug use disorders simultaneously. It is considered an effective screening tool intended to assess whether further assessment is warranted.\u00a0The CRAFFT performs a similar function to the\u00a0CAGE questionnaire, which is used for screening alcohol disorders in adults, but which has poor psychometric properties for teens and adolescents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">The published questionnaire is currently available in three languages: English, Spanish and Portuguese.\u00a0The questionnaire comprises two parts.\u00a0<strong>Part A<\/strong>\u00a0asks whether during the past 12 months the respondent:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">Drank any alcohol (more than a few sips)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">Smoked any marijuana or hashish<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">Used anything else to get &#8220;high&#8221;.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">If the answer is &#8220;no&#8221; to all three questions, the respondent is directed to the first question only of part B. If the answer is &#8220;yes&#8221; to any of the above three questions, the respondent is directed to all six questions in part B.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\">Of the six questions in\u00a0<strong>Part B<\/strong>, two or more \u2018\u2018yes\u2019\u2019 answers suggest a significant problem and need for additional assessment. The questions are<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"><strong>C<\/strong>\u00a0Have you ever ridden in a\u00a0<strong><em>C<\/em>AR<\/strong>\u00a0driven by someone (including yourself) who was \u2018\u2018high\u2019\u2019 or had been using\u00a0alcohol\u00a0or\u00a0drugs?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"><strong>R<\/strong>\u00a0Do you ever use alcohol or drugs to\u00a0<strong><em>R<\/em>ELAX<\/strong>, feel better about yourself, or fit in?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"><strong>A<\/strong>\u00a0Do you ever use alcohol or drugs while you are\u00a0<strong><em>A<\/em>LONE<\/strong>?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"><strong>F<\/strong>\u00a0Do you ever\u00a0<strong><em>F<\/em>ORGET<\/strong>\u00a0things you did while using alcohol or drugs?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"><strong>F<\/strong>\u00a0Do your family or\u00a0<strong><em>F<\/em>RIENDS<\/strong>\u00a0ever tell you that you should cut down on your\u00a0drinking\u00a0or\u00a0drug use?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #ded19b;\"><strong>T<\/strong>\u00a0Have you ever gotten into\u00a0<strong><em>T<\/em>ROUBLE<\/strong>\u00a0while you were using alcohol or drugs?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MAST (Michigan Alcohol Screening Test) Developed in 1971, the Michigan Alcohol Screening Test (MAST) is one of the oldest and most accurate alcohol screening tests available, effective in identifying dependent drinkers with up to 98 percent accuracy.
