As a result, we are subject to feelings of tension and stress, for example the <a href=\"http:\/\/changingminds.org\/explanations\/theories\/cognitive_dissonance.htm\">cognitive dissonance<\/a> and potential <a href=\"http:\/\/changingminds.org\/explanations\/emotions\/shame.htm\">shame<\/a> of doing something outside our <a href=\"http:\/\/changingminds.org\/explanations\/values\/values.htm\">values<\/a>. To handle this discomfort we use various coping methods.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Coping Mechanisms by Type<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/changingminds.org\/explanations\/behaviors\/coping\/attack_mechanisms.htm\">Attack mechanisms<\/a>: That push discomfort onto others.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/changingminds.org\/explanations\/behaviors\/coping\/avoidance_mechanisms.htm\">Avoidance mechanisms<\/a>: That avoid the issue.<\/li>\n<li><a
