Overcoming Guilt and Shame<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n

\u201cWhen our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hearts.\u201d<\/strong> (1 John 3:20)<\/span><\/p>\n

In order grasp the proper perspective of the issue of guilt and shame from God’s perspective, let’s examine the story told by Jesus of the prodigal son in Luke 15.<\/span><\/p>\n

11<\/span><\/sup><\/strong> To illustrate the point further, Jesus told them this story:\u00a0\u201cA man had two sons. <\/strong>12<\/sup><\/strong> The younger son told his father, \u2018I want my share of your estate now before you die.\u2019 So his father agreed to divide his wealth between his sons.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

13<\/span><\/sup><\/strong> \u201cA few days later this younger son packed all his belongings and moved to a distant land, and there he wasted all his money in wild living. <\/strong>14<\/sup><\/strong> About the time his money ran out, a great famine swept over the land, and he began to starve. <\/strong>15<\/sup><\/strong> He persuaded a local farmer to hire him, and the man sent him into his fields to feed the pigs. <\/strong>16<\/sup><\/strong> The young man became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him anything.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

17<\/span><\/sup><\/strong> \u201cWhen he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, \u2018At home even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger! <\/strong>18<\/sup><\/strong> I will go home to my father and say, \u201cFather, I have sinned against both heaven and you, <\/strong>19<\/sup><\/strong> and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired servant.\u201d\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

20<\/span><\/sup><\/strong> \u201cSo he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. <\/strong>21<\/sup><\/strong> His son said to him, \u2018Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

22<\/span><\/sup><\/strong> \u201cBut his father said to the servants, \u2018Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet. <\/strong>23<\/sup><\/strong> And kill the calf we have been fattening. We must celebrate with a feast, <\/strong>24<\/sup><\/strong> for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.\u2019 So the party began.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

25<\/span><\/sup><\/strong> \u201cMeanwhile, the older son was in the fields working. When he returned home, he heard music and dancing in the house, <\/strong>26<\/sup><\/strong> and he asked one of the servants what was going on. <\/strong>27<\/sup><\/strong> \u2018Your brother is back,\u2019 he was told, \u2018and your father has killed the fattened calf. We are celebrating because of his safe return.\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
